Occurrence and status of the European Pond Turtle, Emys orbicularis hellenica (Valenciennes, 1833), on Aegean and Ionian Islands (Greece, Turkey)

A study on the occurrence of Emys orbicularis in Aegean, published 2012, is here extended to Ionian Islands. For first time, a status analysis has also been carried out for individual islands. found 11 Greek islands and one Turkish. Its presence big Rhodes Chios not ascertained so far, while four previously mentioned there no confirmation. On Corfu Lesbos are still viable larger populations. Most other island occurrences characterized by small Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Thassos Samos, E. danger extinction because wetland biotopes threatened. In meantime, many wetlands have placed under protection. The enforcement these nature conservation regulations needs be monitored, can lead species such monitoring.
